High Water vs. Low Water

On the Colorado River

We have a very unique river system by Moab, Utah. We do not have dams upstream that restrict water flow during the spring snow melt. This can cause drastic changes in all the rivers we run – Colorado, Green and San Juan.

he Green and San Juan Rivers will always have a smaller rapid system where it is never above a class 3. In rapid terms, class 1 is almost flat water and the ratings go up to class 6, which would be a waterfall - if we had such a thing in this area.

The class of rapids on the Colorado River depends on which section you are doing and at what time of the year;

Our Scenic Splash full or half day raft is always suitable for any age and any experience level. The rapids will only peak at a class 3 during May-June spring snow melt. Any other time, the rapids are only class 1-2.

Westwater Canyon is a very intense one day raft trip. Rapids are generally class 3-4. May-June participants must be at least 12 years old. Any other time of the year 8 and up may join. This may seem backwards, as the rapids are bigger and younger children are allowed, but it’s because of water temperature. The snow melt makes the water very cold. Later summer months produce warmer water where it is safer for children.

Cataract Canyon is our best and biggest section. These rapids are the best in the west – even bigger than the famous Grand Canyon at some times during the year. May-June could provide class 5 whitewater! Other times of the year would be class 3-4.

This trip uses a different type of raft called a J-Rig. This is a very large, motorized boat which allows us to get exactly where we need to be. The other river sections use a row raft where the guides use man-power to move the boat. This is not possible here during May-June, so we use motors to ensure a safer trip. Age restrictions follow that of Westwater Canyon.
