Utah River and Wilderness Expeditions since 1964... come Tag-A-Long with us!
Do you want an intense white water rafting adventure but only have a day in Moab Utah? Or do you want to see the back country of Canyonlands National Park but don’t like camping? If you said yes to either of these questions, then the Cataract Canyon One Day is for you! Join us as we cruise down the flat water of Canyonlands, blast through the rapids of Cataract Canyon, then accelerate across Lake Powell to Hite Marina at the days end. Don’t let limited time keep you from this must-do Utah Rafting Adventure.
The Colorado river is a wild and natural river above Lake Powell. Snow melt greatly impacts the level, speed and temperature of the water. Cataract Canyon can be the ultimate white water rafting adventure or it can be a great family camping vacation depending on the time of year you choose.
|April to mid-May||Rapids III-IV||Chilly water. Rapids are good.|
|Mid-May to Mid-June||Rapids III-V||Whoa Nelly! Leave small kids at home!|
|Mid-June to October||Rapids III-IV||Warm waters, everybody come! Rapids are good.|
This one day whitewater rafting vacation is 100 miles on the famed Colorado River from Moab Utah to Lake Powell. The one-day Cataract Canyon raft, our Super J, is a special raft designed and built by Tag-A-Long Expeditions in 1999. New technology allows this powerful raft to cover flat water with the speed of a motorboat and yet run the rapids with the surity and excitement of a smaller raft. With this versatility, amazing sites, previously only seen on longer river rafting adventures, are available for you to explore.
Cataract Canyon offers 28 Grand Canyon style rapids. These are some of the most well known and respected white water rapids in the world; “Ben Hurt”, “Powell’s Pocket Watch”, “Capsize”, and the three spectacular rapids in the “Big Drop” series, the steepest section on the mighty Colorado River.
After the last of the white water rapids, we cross Lake Powell. In some months an inflatable kayak or paddle raft can also be added to the adventure. This provides the opportunity to paddle some of the rapids in the canyon under the coaching of a Tag-A-Long guide. Expect to add 2 additional hours to your trip for this experience.
One hundred miles in one day isn’t for everybody, but you’ll know if it has your name on it. An ultimate adventure on its own or as the finale of a hiking/4×4 trip in the Maze or Needles districts of Canyonlands Naitonal Park or self guided canoe trip.
Cataract Canyon river rafting trips in some instances may be substituted with the one day Westwater whitewater rafting trip. Tag-A-Long staff will explain.
The Cataract Canyon rafting adventure begins at the Tag-A-Long office in Moab Utah at 7:00am. After a short, scenic ride to the Potash Boat Ramp downstream of Moab and a brief orientation, we launch! You will start the day on flat water enjoying the red rock cliffs and trying to spot eagles, hawks, bighorn sheep and mule deer. We point out locations of interest like petrified wood, ancient ruins, geologic wonders and historical sites. At noon we stop for lunch at a delightful spot just below the Confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers.
After lunch, a white water orientation is presented to let you know what to expect about rafting in Cataract Canyon. And then you’re off pounding through the mountains and valleys of waves and red rock splendor occasionally dotted with wildlife.
After the last of the white water rapids, we quickly cross Lake Powell to Hite Marina. You must choose in advance a return option from Lake Powell to Moab or onwards to your next destination. Our favorite choice of returning to Moab is to board the Scenic Flight. The flight takes you up the Colorado River above the rapids just rafted in Cataract Canyon and over Canyonlands National Park before landing at the Canyonlands Airfield outside of Moab. Moab staff meet our rafting trips at the airfield, then transport visitors to town. Approximate time of arrival back to Moab with this option is 6:00 p.m.
1. Return to Moab by land. The ride from Hite Marina to Moab takes about four hours through the high desert country of southeastern Utah. Arrival in Moab will be about 9:00 p.m. The cost is $86.88 / person.
2. We strongly recommend a scenic charter flight. The flight is about 45 minutes making arrival back in Moab about 6 p.m. This once-in-a-lifetime flight is only $140.00 / person.
3. Tag-A-Long will shuttle guest vehicles to Hite Marina on Lake Powell so it will be waiting for you when you arrive at the marina early in the afternoon. The cost of this service is $244.35 per vehicle.
