Utah's River Lengths (GK4 + CA4)

Trip OverviewTrip OverviewDetailed ItineraryDetailed Itinerary
Here you can attain two great row trips back to back. Major Wesley Powell explored and mapped the region in the 1800s. He named so much of the places we will pass along the way. First the gentler rapids of the Majestic Canyons of the Green River in Desolation and Gray Canyons serve up 50 sporty rapids 4 of this 5 day trip. Smaller craft can be arranged for a more sporty experience. After returning to Moab for a night we re-convene for another row trip on the Colorado River. It serves up one hundred miles from Moab to Lake Powell. After 50 miles of calm water, 28 Grand Canyon style rapids swiftly dispatch the raft to Lake Powell for a reflective conclusion across Lake Powell.

The Big Picture

The Green River lies in a wide river canyon. Its banks are lined with giant old cottonwood trees intermingled with juniper and pinion. The green of the trees stands in stark contrast to the rock cliffs, making this one of the most beautiful – and little appreciated -- canyons in Utah. You’ll encounter rapids four of the five days – over 50 in all! This is more rapids than on any other Tag-A-Long rafting vacations! These are good natured rapids, easy to learn on and play in. The whitewater is rolling and playful in disposition yet give eager students the opportunity to learn to read and negotiate the river. You can choose your own vessel, too: inflatable kayak, family paddle raft or the "mother" raft.

There are some stipulations for boat assignments that will require a closer look with your reservation.  One inflatable per three to five participants is provided for the entire trip to share. Should you prefer to have an inflatable exclusively on these rafting vacations, you are required to rent. The first raft must carry supplies and will have to be filled before a paddle boat can be considered and there must be enough interest to paddle it.

The Details

Day 1 – Lunch & Dinner
You depart from Tag-A-Long’s Moab Utah office at 8:30 a.m. We’re headed for the airport, where we will board charter planes that will take you to begin your Green River rafting trip. Guides for this five-day Utah river rafting adventure await you. After flying over the high desert country, we land at the Sand Wash field to take a short walk to the Green River. The expedition begins with a discussion and instructions on handling your whitewater boat. This first day you’ll have an opportunity to get into the river as we float through a nice calm stretch. You’ll get lots of paddling practice to prepare for the whitewater tomorrow. Tonight we will set up camp as guides teach you and your family how to pitch tents, and learn about other camp systems. Dinner is our treat, a surprisingly delicious outdoor meal prepared by your guides. In the meantime, you can play Frisbee, horseshoes, or just relax by the riverside.

Day 2 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll hit the river and splash right into the first whitewater of the day. This rafting vacation starts out small so you can slowly build your confidence in the whitewater. If you decide you don’t want to paddle, you can always ride the support raft with the guides. The day will be spent exploring the deep canyon of the Green River which at one point is even deeper than the Grand Canyon at its deepest point! Another night of camping will have you accustomed to outdoor camp life just like the pioneers!

Day 3 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Today is a diverse day along the river. There’s lots more river rafting containing beautiful, lazy sections of calm water and smaller whitewater rafting. There’s also lots of stories to be told today as we visit old cowboy camps. Your guides will share tales of outlaw hideouts and cattle rustlers with you. You’ve heard of Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch? Well keep an out for signs that they were here! This is their old stomping ground and there may still be a few ghosts around! Try to pick out the spots where they hid from the lawmen who were hot on their trail! Tonight, you’ll hear more stories as you enjoy dinner by the side of the river – maybe in the same spot those outlaws ate dinner years ago. After sundown, find the Milky Way and let your imagination soar.

Day 4 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
This is the day that will get your adrenaline flowing as we encounter both large and small rapids. You’ll rock and roll in the waves as you maneuver your raft downstream. Remember, if you don’t want to paddle your own boat, you can always climb aboard the "mother raft." We have two rafting vacations that float us past Native American land. On the San Juan, land is allocated to teh Navajo. Green River rafting trips takes us by the Ute Indian Reservation on the north east of the river and pure Old West cattle country on the other side. Tonight you’ll be mighty proud of yourself as you recall the day’s accomplishments, make camp and enjoy your evening meal. You’ve earned every delicious bite today! Maybe you should try sleeping out under the stars tonight since it’s your last night of camping.

Day 5 Breakfast & lunch
This morning you’ll spend your last half day saying goodbye to Utah river rafting. You’ll enjoy a few more rapids, some more calm water and playful riffles. After lunch we arrive where vehicles will be waiting to drive us back to Moab. You should arrive about 5:00 p.m. at the Tag-A-Long office to be delivered to a hotel for this single night. Dinner and breakfast on your own.

Day 6  Lunch & Dinner
Your Moab adventure begins at the Tag-A-Long office in Moab, Utah at 7:15 a.m. Depart at 7:30 a.m. for a short, scenic ride to the Colorado River "put-in." Today is a lazy oar day on the river. You’ll have a chance to slow down to the river’s pace and get to know her intimately. We’ll stop and hike to see petrified wood and your guide will offer interpretation about river history, wildlife and cultural studies.

Day 7 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After breakfast we continue our Utah river rafting on the Colorado River on an oar raft. Another day of drifting on the river will find you relaxed and completely shed of the pace of everyday life. You’ll have an opportunity to gaze the skies for eagles, hawks, Peregrine falcons and watch the river’s surface as blue heron skim along searching for food. This is a contemplative day with your companions as you notice your body’s slower rhythms. Tonight you can pick your guide’s brain for all the stories it holds about canyon country and Major Powell the Utah river predecessor.

Day 8 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
As we continue our leisurely journey down the Colorado River, we’ll stop and give you the opportunity to hike over "the Loop." On this trail you’ll climb up to see memorable views of the Colorado from a hawk’s perspective. After your hike, we will run the first of the famous rapids of Cataract Canyon! Tonight you’ll camp with the roar of rapids in your ears and dreams of tomorrow’s wild Cataract raft trip adventure on your minds!

Day 9 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Today you’ll have an opportunity to hike up to the strange formations known as the Doll House in the mysterious Maze region of Canyonlands National Park. The Maze is otherwise only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle, so you’re truly in the backcountry of this amazing wilderness park. Today is also the day we encounter some of the most intense whitewater rafting in North America. You’ll say hello to Brown Betty, Capsize, and Ben Hurt. As we continue downstream, the rapids become even more intense until we enter the Big Drop, the steepest descent of the Colorado River. Here you’ll encounter Satan’s Gut, Little Niagara in this breathtaking turbulence. This is the BIG day with BIG water and the BIG adventure! Tonight you’ll camp near Lake Powell where you can enjoy a scrumptious meal and recount the day’s events with your friends in thrill-seeking.

Day 10 Breakfast & Lunch
You’ll be up, eat breakfast and be ready for the conclusion of your Moab adventure Utah river rafting. Today we’ll run the last of the whitewater before beginning our journey across Lake Powell or be on our way to Hite Marina. You’ll have ample opportunity to swim, sunbathe, and relax with friends as we motor across this final stretch called Lake Powell, named for Major Powell.

The flight is about 30 minutes making your arrival back in Moab about 5:30 p.m. This once-in-a-lifetime flight is only $105.00.
