The Big Picture

Horseshoe Canyon is in the outlands, an annex of Canyonlands National Park. On this trip you are the adventurer, you are walking in the footsteps of the ancient Anasazi. You will visit one of the world’s finest, undisturbed rock art panels left by ancient American Indian cultures. You’ll visit the Great Gallery rock art panel, famous for its "Holy Ghost" image and ponder the mystery of their disappearance as your guide helps you unravel their story. The hiking in the canyons will leave you feeling strong and confident and maybe a little unwilling to return to civilization. While the hiking is appropriate for people in relatively good condition, there are no technical climbs or skills required.

The Details

This itinerary will vary as it is a charter trip designed to meet your ideals.

Begin at the Tag-A-Long’s Moab,Utah office at 7:15 a.m. With your friendly, competent guide, you’ll board a 4X4 vehicle and travel across the high desert to Green River, Utah, to the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead. Horseshoe Canyon is one of the highlights of the Canyonlands parcels: a hike deep into the canyon to see The Great Gallery, the mysterious, world-renown rock art panel left by ancient American Indian cultures in the Southwest. Your guide will explain to you the difference between petroglyphs and pictographs and will discuss various rock art styles including the ghostly Barrier Canyon style, displayed at the Great Gallery. You’ll have time to sit quietly with the powerful images that tower above you. The hike to the panel descends about 600 feet. The hike is 8 miles round trip. You’ll want a day pack for lunch, and water. Upon return to the rim, we will retrace our drive back to Moab.
