The
Secrets of Green River Utah
The Green River is one of the hidden secrets of the American West.
It begins in Wyoming, where Major Wesley
Powell in 1869 first ran the Green River
in it's entirety and beyond into
Cataract and Grand Canyons, beginning a
lengthy history of river running further
endorsed by commercial outfitter
development starting in large part here
in Utah.
The Green
River has a remote placement in Utah. In
Desolation and Gray Canyons where
Tag-A-Long promotes guided river rafting
trips, large sandy beaches are regularly
shaded by mature Cottonwood trees. The
Uintah and Ouray Reservation spans the
eastern Green River border multiplying
the sense of remoteness as those river
banks
are off limits for camping. Culturally,
these canyons were frequented by
trappers, Native Americans, Butch
Cassidy's gang and settlers. The hikes
in Desolation and Gray Canyons reveal a
sensational passage of cultures. The
river rafting is splendid fun. Take
turns paddling fifty fun rapids four of
five days on the Green River or ride
with a guide on board the larger raft. Here the
river guide coaches the family adventure
vacation on paddling.
The Green
River in Labyrinth and Stillwater
Canyons maintains the remote quality in
large part because local outfitters have
a 'gentleman's agreement' to deploy
motorized trips on the Colorado River so
these canyons are precious for the
solitude quality found so near
Moab Utah. There are no rapids here, so
many choose to transfer strong camping
skill onto a calm river canoe trip
within these canyons. Competent car
campers often retro fit skills to paddle
canoes to create this family adventure
vacation.
Stillwater Canyon or Labyrinth Canyon?
It is a toss up. Each one is teeming
with hiking possibilities, fabulous
points of interest, incredible geology
and classic red rock canyon wall views.
If participants have time, do the entire length in
one trip. If participants are pressed for time,
do one half this time and I bet
the family or friends will return to see the other portion
of the Green River a future visit.
