The Big Picture
An expedition into Westwater Canyon delivers maximum whitewater in minimum time! This is an unforgettable escape into a unique backcountry canyon. Here the oldest layer of rock, the Pre-Cambrian Vishnu Schist erupts out of the belly of the earth. The schist rock glistens black in the sun before giving way to stunning red rock cliffs that tower above it. And oh, the whitewater youll see! As canyon walls squeeze the river into a tighter and tighter space, the river moves faster or more furiously, pouring over rocks and holes. In a small, lightweight row-raft you are as close to the action as you can get! This is a classic whitewater ride and
is tempered only by
Cataract
Canyon. Compare to find
the best one day anywhere in the West!
The Details
Upon meeting at 7:00
a.m. at our office, youll board vehicles at the Tag-A-Long office for the ride to the river "put in." After our guides give you a thorough safety orientation and outfit you with a life vest, youre off on your adventure. This morning you have opportunity to get in tune with the river and soak up the gorgeous wilderness known as Westwater Canyon.
Bring your breakfast with
you to eat at the launch
point. See how many blue herons or eagles you can spot.
Keep watching for these
creatures as the trip
embarks. The first point of interest is the Miners Cabin, a historic gold mining camp. This is Wild Horse Canyon, a precursor to Westwater. Here we run smaller 'warm-up' rapids, later, enjoy lunch. The first of Westwater is Little Dolores Rapid. Well plunge into the fast-moving waters that await us! Youll hear more history and folklore as the raft speeds toward Marble Canyon Rapid and then, hold on! The next succession of rapids flaunt names like Big Hummer, Funnel Falls, Surprise, Skull and Sock It To Me and youll feel the punch of every one of them! Your guides will do their best to avoid the mysterious Magnetic Wall and Room of Doom! Youll exit the whitewater adventure on rolling and rumbling Bowling Alley rapid. The trip ends in the rhythm of the river with plenty of time to talk to each other or pick the brain of your seasoned, naturalist guide. At days end, you will have enjoyed more rapids, more excitement and more of a backcountry wilderness experience than you can find anywhere in the American West! Youll depart from Cisco where Tag-A-Long shuttles wait to escort you back to Moab. Youve had a great day on the legendary Colorado River!
May and June wetsuits may be required. Tag-A-Long Expeditions has wetsuits for rent.
We will want you
to check in the evening
prior to departure for
wetsuits or 40 minutes
before departure day of trip
in May and June.
