Adventure Level

Anyone can join us on this great one-day trip. Half the day is spent on some playful rapids on the Colorado River and half the day is spent in a Jeep exploring the Island in the Sky District in Canyonlands National Park. Some of the best scenery in America is right here on this trip!

Fitness Level: Average to below average. Limited hiking.

Your mini-expedition begins at 7:00 a.m.* where we board four-wheel drive vehicles for a drive into Canyonlands National Park.

The Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park is the focus of this part of your day. The tour begins going out Potash Road through BLM land following the river below Dead Horse Point State Park and into Canyonlands National Park. Throughout the tour your experienced and knowledgeable guide will provide you with information on the Park and the various scenery that you will see. There will be an emphasis on the history, archeology, and geology of the area with plenty of stops for pictures. Your guide will also point out natural sandstone arches, and other formation that many visitors might miss on their own while visiting the Park and the canyons below. Once in Shafer Canyon, we climb from the canyon floor to the top of the mesa, via the famous Shafer Trail. Using Shafer Trail’s winding switchbacks the tour will take guests from below the mesa to an incredible viewpoint set almost 2,000 feet above where you came from. This tour offers guests the opportunity to see the splendor of Canyonlands from the comfort of our fully enclosed, air-conditioned, 4×4 vehicles. You will return to the office to grab your sunscreen and water bottles for your afternoon rafting trip.

The second half of the day’s adventure finds you splashing along on the mighty Colorado River. You’ll enjoy some of the most enchanting scenery to be found anywhere in the American West while you float along, swim or hit playful class I-II rapids. Throughout the day, you’ll learn about native wildlife, the cultural and natural history of the canyonlands region, and the fascinating geologic story of this amazing country – and you’ll have a ball all the while! You are back in Moab by around 4:30.*

* This itinerary may be operated in reverse (RI0) to begin with rafting at 8:30 a.m. and to conclude with 4×4 around 4:30 p.m. Please check-in the evening before your departure to verify your departure times.

What To Bring

Since this is a full day combination tour,  please keep in mind that we will not have much time in between the two adventures, so it’s a good idea to come dressed wearing what you prefer to wear on the raft. Clothes that can get wet and quick-drying fabrics are ideal. Or, simply wear your swimsuit under shorts and a shirt. Packing sunscreen, a hat and water bottles for the river are all you will really need. You will have a chance to change shoes if need be; shoes that can get wet and will stay on your feet for the river are recommended. There is a little room for your backpack or purse in the back of our 4×4 vehicles, but we recommend leaving these in your car while rafting, as they could get wet.

Don’t forget your camera!
